BTP has been doing this at my local station for quite some time, usually on a Friday night. It's quite unobtrusive, in that the dog and handler stand quite some distance away from the gateline. The dog just sits there patiently until it smells something interesting, and then walks alongside the 'target'. The look on the little herbert's face when he realises that the nice doggy that's just taken a fancy to him has a 6 ft 10" Copper attached to it is a picture to behold.

The nice doggy can only be sniffing for drugs, or booze.
It cant sniff knives, and I doubt it could find guns from a distance.

No doubt it will be soon be trained to sniff out cameras

I don't like the idea. I'm all for improving security, but I have a fear of dogs, and that isn't really that uncommon. Also, if you where on your way home from the butchers would you end up getting searched for drugs, when all the dog wanted was a few sausages?

Just feels like another freedom being taken away, going through airport-style security isn't going to make people feel like taking the train any more either.

Muslims are calling for a ban because according to their 'Religion' all dogs are Unclean.

Re dogs only being after a pound of sausages, back in 1977, I was both living and working in North Wales. One day while approaching a butchers shop in my works van, I actually SAW a dog run from the same shop and WITH a string of sausages in its mouth. Like you, I have seen it in comics, but to see it for real is unbelievable.

Yeah, I read that report. It's just silly...most Muslims would understand that the presence of the dogs is as much for their protection as anyone else. It's a shame that a few idiots have to tarnish the majority.
