I sometime wonder if the prerequisite of becomming an eco warrior is brain removal! Don't get me wrong I am fully in suport of conservation but I also understand conservation and saving the planet is a delicate balancing act.
I often feel bad about the number of trees we are cutting down as we reopen the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. However the line would not be passed for passenger running if we didn't. HMRI rightly insist on clear sight lines and sadly this involves cutting down trees. In steam days lineside fires did the job for us and no doubt once we start using steam on a regular basis this could help to keep grow in check! The up side is that we make useful amounts of money selling the logs and with the soaring cost of other fuels we are looking forward to good sales over the next few months! Best wishes, John H-T. |

There was uproar on the LT&SR (C2C to many today) when they lobbed some down last year and even on the Wisbech & March Bramley Line we have met with complaints about cutting trees down that have grown far too close to the running line and all because HMP Whitemoor is the other side of some of them and residents don't want to see the wall that is screened by other trees further back, so not in need of cutting down.
One resident even asked if she could have one tree we had not planned to cut down that was between her house and the Prison, but isn't now because it grew too big and she didn't come out for it when offered, so we uprooted it.
