Rail ticket machine upgrade call (BBC News)

Campaigners are calling for ticket machines at stations to be improved because passengers are often unable to access the cheapest fares.

I saw this on the news this morning. I don`t think the machines can do much more than they do now as they can`t tell what train you intend to catch.
I think that if you want a split ticket the onus is on the customer to arrive in time to buy at the ticket office.
