Rail worker: 'Crossings not safe' (BBC News)

A Network Rail employee whose car was hit by a train calls for barriers to be installed at every level crossing.

More from BBC News...

Having seen a motorist only yesterday completely ignore a red traffic light at a road junction although fortunately no collision was caused, I cannot help but agree that a crossing protected only by lights must be dangerous. Of course if everyone always obeyed signals, there would be no problem but the fact is they don't and need to be protected if only because of the danger they could cause to others.

In this Health and Safety dominated age where some things are taken to ridiculous lengths, it does seem strange that such potentially dangerous crossings somehow have escaped the attention of the H&S police. I think it may only be a matter of time.............

I have seen motoprists drive across the Holme crossing as the barriers started to come down, luckily they seem to come down when a train leaves either Huntingdon or Peterborough or that is how it feels when sitting waiting for a train to come past so I guess they think there is plenty of time.
Or is it a challenge to beat the barriers?

Not so,
Some motorist are suing Petyerborough Council because some rising bollards rose up beneath their cars even though there is a No Entry sign plainly visible so spikes would definitely make holes in the sump and a big claim for damages.

Where i live at Roche on the Par to Newquay line there are several open crosssings and over the years there have been a lot of accidents one lady killed in a volvo car it was put down to the bright sunlight being low in sky and she didnt see the lights.
Years ago all of them were manned with gates.
Like you say if everyone did what they are surpposed to do there would no problem but people dont.
