If you are interested in railway history here is a link to full details on the Soham train disaster 2nd June 1944.

It involved a train carrying munitions and makes interesting reading.

http://www.soham.org.uk/history/trainexplosion.htm

Reading about the bravery of the driver and fireman brought tears to my eyes.

I think that someone has grasped the wrong end of the stick here; what has re-opening stations got to do with improving clearances and providing line capacity for freightliner trains? Very wishful thinking on someone's part I reckon.

Cheers, 62440.

I was wondering that myself; after all, the actual LINE never closed, just the stations. I fear you may be right, although perhaps 'they' might seize the opportunity of some funding to push for reopening. Towns which had their stations closed in the 60's have almost invariably increased in both size and population, a factor never taken into account at the tme, and it's about time the situation nationwide should be given some serious consideration.

The traincrew of the ammo train that blew up, are buried in Littleport, Near Ely, with a Memorial plaque adorning one wall of the library. From what I understand, that is where the men were from.
