Insurance inspections.
Do diesel locos on preserved lines have to have any formal inspections for insurance purposes before they can be used ?
And what if they are registered for use on the national network, do they then have to have a special examination of "railworthyness" ?

Hi Philip
From what I undertand all diesels used on public heritage lines normally have an "FTR" exam (Fitness to run) before being used for any duties each day. These are different for each loco type and cover all the safety and operationally essential equipment. This must be carried out by a Qualified Driver or Traction Inspector and signed off BEFORE being used that day. Also loco's should follow the relevant "a" "b" "c" service exams etc as the specified engine and/or operating hours are reached. Sorry don't know about the BIG railways current procedures. Hope this is helpful Regards |
