LNER dining car 1930s.
LNER dining car 1930s.
In the 1930s, passengers on the ‘Flying Scotsman’ had over seven hours to enjoy the succession of meals and snacks on offer in the restaurant cars. Fine dining was the hallmark of the service. This table in a London & North Eastern Railway dining car has been laid with Moet & Chandon champagne, bread rolls, curled butter and a vase of spring flowers.

Speaking about food, back in the early 60s when we were spotting off the "glass bridge" at Preston, we would use the station buffet and get a lunch of egg on toast an a mug of tea for 6d. This also doubled up as an excuse to get access to the platform as the railway bobby had instructions to eject any spotters from the station vicinity. I seem to recall you were considered a "criminal" back then for loitering on the station platform with a scrappy notebook and blunt pencil!

Most trains now of course cannot compare.
First transpennine services to Edinburgh from Manchester has just a snack trolley, but some trains are not too bad. Here are a few selections from todays railway: http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/trains/first-class/ http://www.eurostar.com/UK/uk/leisur..._board_new.jsp http://www.eastmidlandstrainssales.c...board-services http://www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk/...rst_class.aspx http://www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk/PremierService/ I'll get some more when I have found them.
