Survey. Need help for my GCSE!
My graphics GCSE is on flat pack model railway buildings and for it I need to do a survey. As I dont know many people who enjoy model railways I need some people interested in them to help me. If you could answer my questions that would be really helpful. Just add your answers to the thread or send me them and ill sift through them later. Thanks guys.
1. How old are you? 2. How long have you been making model railways? 3. How do you buy your model buildings (e.g internet, shops)? 4. What scale do you use? 5. What model railway theme do you have? 6. What type of buildings do you prefer? 7. Would you prefer to buy a ready made plastic building or a flat pack card building? 8. How much would you be willing to spend on a flat pack model building? P.S If you have any questions just ask and i'll answer when I can. Any helpful information would make my project a whole lot easier and I'd be extremely grateful. |

Hi J4Y,
Just to answer your questions; 1. Old enough to have shaky hands and failing eyesight. 2. Since your grandad was a lad. 3 Usually buy in shops, you get a better idea of what you are buying and you can compare kits. 4. Mostly OO but have built N in the past. 5. Mainly London Midland. 6. Card kits. I particularly like Metcalf kits. They always fit together well and look good when finished. 7. Definitely card flat pack, they usually look more realistic. 8. Depends on how flush I am and which building I need for a particular purpose. May i suggest that you buy a Metcalf kit for around £5. Study how the flatpack is laid out on the sheets. Carefully assemble it and note how the bits fit together and the corner tabs are located. Take your time and you will end up with a miniature building that you can be proud of. You will also gain a great deal of insight into your graphics module. P.S. I was a CDT teacher in another life. |

Welcome to the Forum J4Y.
1. How old are you? 64 2. How long have you been making model railways? Over 50 years 3. How do you buy your model buildings (e.g internet, shops)? Mainly shops or exhibitions 4. What scale do you use? 00 and 0n30 5. What model railway theme do you have? Mainly preservation, mostly steam with a bias to the LMS. Also interested in American Narrow Gauge Logging Railways. 6. What type of buildings do you prefer? They need to fit the space I have and be in character with the layout. 7. Would you prefer to buy a ready made plastic building or a flat pack card building? It is a case of "Is it the right building?" I may even have to attempt to make it myself! 8. How much would you be willing to spend on a flat pack model building? As little as possible! In the end, "Is it the right building for the job?!" Hope this is helpful. Good luck with the project. Best wishes, John H-T.

2. How long have you been making model railways? 4 years. 3. How do you buy your model buildings (e.g internet, shops)? both 4. What scale do you use? OO 5. What model railway theme do you have? GWR/MSWJR 6. What type of buildings do you prefer? Ones which match my modelling theme. 7. Would you prefer to buy a ready made plastic building or a flat pack card building? No real preference but flat pack card enables modifications to help replicate the real thing in minature. 8. How much would you be willing to spend on a flat pack model building? Up to £10 but it would need to be a reasonably large building (say a large signal box with some interior detail) for that money. |
