Hello GerryB and welcome to the Railway Forum. Sorry, I don't know why the Ballachulish Branch was closed in 1953. I was only 6 then and living in Rhodesia.

Something in the back of my head says there was a land slip(avalanche)which I believe were a constant problem on that line.

Welcome to the Forum Gerry. I don't know the reason off the top of my head but will look into it.

Best wishes,

John H-T.

This took some finding, but here 'tis! From Trains Illustrated November 1953:-

"The Scottish Region's Ballachulish branch from Connel Ferry, near Oban, was re-opened on August 24th after three months' closure owing to extensive flood damage-an adroit piece of planning, for the first train that day steamed into Ballachulish almost exactly 50 years after the branch's opening, writes Mr S. Reekie. Ballachulish Station was gaily decked for the occasion and a Caledonian coat of arms had been unearthed for the decorations."

Regards, 62440.

Thanks for that 62440. I haven't had time to investigate this one.

Model Rail for February 2010 had an interesting article on the Ballachulish Branch in their Masterplan Series including a track plan of Balachulish itself as a possible subject to model.

Best wishes,

John H-T.
