Narrow gauge super gala.
Now that the welsh Highland has been linked up with the Ffestioniog, perhaps now we can think about an epic narrow gauge gala to celebrate this 40 mile railway of wonders.
The welsh highland has a very large loading gauge, so could it be possible for one of the vale of rheidol tanks to visit, and work this section, and possibly work with it's southern counterpart, Lyd? Other visiting locos that I suggest are: A Brecon Mountain Baldwin 4-6-2 A quarry class tank from Llanberis Stanhope a Baldwin class 10-2-D Russel (when overhaul is finished ) It's just a thought, but when the current improvement plans are fulfilled, I don't see why this cannot be possible, unless coupling is a serious issue. We could also have an NG15 in a few years.

I agree. Diesel is hardly represented at all when it comes to narrow gauge railways, and are generally only used to fill in for failed steam locos or quieter times of year.
The FR/WHR/WHR.Ltd all have pleanty of large diesels, however, the sight of total diesel operation might deter some visitors. The railway has a huge area of influence owing to its vast size in heritage line terms, and services are being extended as the railway is further improved by phase 5. With the projected new rolling stock, it could be possible that diesel locos will become used more often for the likely high number of stock transfers.

A Rheidol loco will not fit up the Welsh Highland. However it is possible that Lyd may visit the Vale of Rheidol at some point in the future for comparison trials.
This year's Superpower weekend on the Welsh Highland is likely to feature 4 Garratts (3 NGG16s and K1), a Mallet and a Darjeeling B class. Plus probably one or two other F&WHR residents. |
