1000 New Coaches???

Apart form the newspapers, I know nothing much about this. And after Greyrigg, we all have our own ideas on media accuracy.

Is the Government's "1000 new coaches" just a publicity stunt for example, because the TOCs plan to build 200 coaches a year anyway, so in 5 years we will have 1000 new coaches, although they will have scrapped or off-hired 1500 during the same peroid

Will they be the right type, and for the right duties, or will we get intercity coaches when we need commuter coaches. or vice versa?

Or 1000 new coaches and no motive power to pull them, because they "forgot" to order any.

Is it really £1,000,000 per coach ?

(Might they even be known as Parliamentry Trains? )

So what does the forum think?

Question

Why waste money on new coaches why not refurbish the old Mark III Virgin got rid of when it introduced its Voyagers and Pendilinos, these could replace 156s and 158s who intern could replace the auful Class 142s.

Apparently Virgin want to increase the Pendilinos from 9 coaches to 10 or 11 to increase capacity. This could be part of that 1000 new coaches thing.

I agree with GWR9600. They could bring the standards of class 156s and 158s to the same as the latest multiple units.

No it won't include the pendolino's as they are leased from Angel these extra carraiges are being purchased by the DFT and leased by the DFT. They will mainly be for operators in the south east where there is cronic overcrowding. I just hope the DFT re-order those extra units thats Transpennine express had originally ordered and order a 4th trailer. Also as i sidenote i wouldnt be surprised if there's a fleet replacement for FCC

Is this perhaps a first step back to Nationalisation?. It seems like the Government is starting to call the Shots. Would it be good idea I wonder?.

Possibly Southern. Network Rail is a public company in all but name, the reason it wont officially become BR MarkII is because this would affect GBs golden rule that debt should make more than 40% of th UKs GDP, hence why he is such a big fan of PFI for schools and hospitals as it keeps goverment borrowing of the goverment balance sheets.
