Lockerbie and Carstairs
Did you know the 50 mile section of the line between Lockerbie and Carstairs is the longest stretch of railway in the UK without an intermediate station.

The Carstairs-Lockerbie section has to be one of the most interesting mainline routes in the UK especially with the gradients, including Beattock Summit and the many curves as well as the lineside scenery. I just wish I'd been old enough to see and hear the class 50s at Beattock summit in the early 1970s before electrification.

I know what you mean about steam. I was born in 69 so I've no memories of steam on BR but on the Bo'ness and Kinneil railway its always great to get steam haulage up the steep gradient to Birkhill. It must have been a lot more dramatic at Beattock with the line speeds and length of the trains.
