Concerning The Derry Central Railway.
Dear whom ever it may concern,
I was wondering if someone could help me in my search to find old cine film of the Derry Central Railway, which was native to South Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The Derry Central ran from Magherafelt to Macfin, the branch line was twenty nine and a quarter miles long and the track was Irish Standard Gauge, five foot and three inches. There is a book on the Derry Central by James H. McIlfatrick and in it he says that passenger traffic stopped on the 26th August 1950. Thus, many people flocked from both Ulster and Great Britain to witness the closure of the line. They were aboard the last official passenger train to enter Magherafelt station. I know this is a long shot but if there were any photos or cine film taken of the line before its closure to passengers in 1950, perhaps one of you know someone who was present for the line's closure and took either photos or cine film of the line. As I have said, the line closed to passengers in 1950 but remained open to freight until October 1959 when the line officially closed altogether. Yours Sincerely W.T.Phillips. |
