I'd say that's a good way to start, or talk to the other spotters on the platform.
Perhaps you could have a look online beforehand at what trains use the specific station(s) that you will be going to.
Otherwise, feel free to post any photos in the gallery here and the forum members on here will help with identification (I'm sure we'd like to see your pics anyway!)
