Birmingham Snow Hill "clapper" on old 78 record
I seem to remember an old 78 rpm record which had a comic story about the "clapper" which was fitted in the tunnel at Snow Hill so that enginemen knew where they were in the tunnel when it was full of smoke. Any info about either the "clapper" or the 78 would be appreciated. I would assume the record dated bck to the 1930s.

Hello thestourbridgelion and welcome to the Railway Forum. That's quite a handle you have chosen. I think I will have to shorten it to TSBL if that OK with you. I will also be interested in the answer to your question.

The Stourbridge Lion is the narrow boat where I live some of the time as well as my home town-although not for many years. Of course S/Lion has a railway connection as the name of the first locomotive to run in the USA at Honesdale, Pennsylvania and for those with a historic interest in steam will know that the original was similar to Agenoria in York museum. It was built in Stourbridge and someone painted/chalked a lion on the front of the boiler prior to exporting-hence the name.
Anyway-thanks for the well wish. I think the question is quite a tricky one to answer! |
