RVR Planning permission granted!
Great news for the Rother Valley Railway and Kent & East Sussex Railway - planning permission has been granted for the rebuilding of the railway between Northbridge Street, Robertsbridge & Junction Road, near Bodiam. Once completed, this will fill in the 2 mile gap between the RVR's current limit of operations from Robertsbridge at Northbridge Street to Junction Road, which is 1/2 mile east of Bodiam - the most easterly point of the K&ESR.
There is a lot of work to do of course! I believe there are 3 level crossings to install plus bridges and embankments to be rebuilt before relaying the 2 miles of track, with all associated signalling etc. http://www.kesr.org.uk/images/phocad...e-20170316.pdf Tony |

Opposition from the local business community, according to the BBC News last night. They are not keen on the level crossing that will have to be installed across the busy A21 road.

However the local council are keen.
As they will be able to introduce speed control measures. One other aspect of the scheme is the limits on operation at peak road traffic times. |

The Secretary of State for Transport has now given permission for the Transport & Works Order, paving the way for the railway to be reinstated between Robertsbridge & Junction Road (Bodiam). In short, the Secretary of State has agreed with the Inspector chairing the Public Inquiry in 2021, who decided that the potential benefits far outweighed any disadvantages, with issues such as the 3 level crossings (Northbridge Street, Robertsbridge; A21, Robertsbridge; B2244, Junction Road) will be mitigated such that any negative impact will be minor. They also think that installing a level crossing at Junction Road will require a 40mph speed restriction around the crossing (reduced from the current 60mph limit), which in turn is likely to improve road safety in an area which has seen a relatively high number of accidents!
Other concerns have been dismissed by the Inspector & Secretary of State as either negligable or sufficient mitigations can be put into place to bring any negative effects into a tolerable level. https://assets.publishing.service.go...ion-letter.pdf Tony |
