Well, I wish there were some mid 50's - early 60's (age) railway liking gals in North Essex, cos I would love to meet a lady to share my experiences with.
 My late wife was not exactly an enthusiast.

Welcome aboard the Railway Forum. I know a very good passed fireman who is now also trainee driver and she is doing great and why not?, if you enjoy your footplate course why not consider volunteering at your local line.
