Counting the cost of rail travel (BBC News)

As UK train ticket prices rise again, why are our railways so costly?

Because we have a government which wants to control everything (via the ORR) but unfortunately it couldn't organise a p*ss up in a brewery, eg:

1) Dft wants to encourage people to leave their cars behind and use public transport, whilst at the same time.....

2) The Treasury says that there are far more car drivers than rail passengers so it's not fair to burdon the tax payer and they will reduce the amount of money paid to the railways.

3) The choice of which company wins a franchise is based purely on which of them is prepared to pay the largest amount to the treasury, not on how it will develop the railway.

4) Network Rail, a 'not for profit company' - keeps announcing record profits

5) There is no 30 year plan for the railway, in fact there doesn't seem to be any sense of coherent direction.

Really a bunch of 5 year olds could do a better job !!

I went to Blackpool this morning, and on the Prom believe me bracing was not the word it was real brass monkey.

I could not agree more with Foghuts comments, but I think it should be a bunch of two year olds instead of five year olds. At the end of the day it boils down to the big boys bank accounts and how much they can cram in them before they naff everything up regardless of who they rip off or upset. The customer is only a money supply to them these days.
