Train mows down crowd at India festival, at least 58 dead

How is this possible? Also not even headline news.

NEW DELHI — A speeding train ran over a crowd watching fireworks during a religious festival in northern India on Friday, killing at least 58 people and injuring dozens more, police said.
The train failed to stop after the accident on the outskirts of Amritsar, a city in Punjab state, said the state governing Congress party politician, Pratap Singh Bajwa.
Police Commissioner S. S. Srivastava said the police have found 58 bodies so far.
The Press Trust of India news agency said two trains arrived from the opposite direction on separate tracks at the same time giving little opportunity for people to escape. However, the casualties were caused by one of the trains, it quoted officials as saying.
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was extremely saddened by the accident.

Crikey,
Yes, it does boggle the brain.
But, with 700 odd people crowded in, I guess that some invaded railway property.
Many fatalities occur daily on the Indian Rail network.
I don't think that I would enjoy riding on top of carriages due to overcrowding on trains.
Steve.

Sadly for those involved attitudes to safety in India are generally far lower than just about any other country. At some point in the future maybe they will start to take a different attitude. Richard

G'day,
Viewing some of the Indian Railway cab ride You Tuber video clips is also a tad hair raising.
And from other sources, it can be very bad for a train driver who runs over a sacred cow.
I am happier trekking around India from me armchair in my loungeroom.
Steve.
