Eritrea There is a narrow guage railway 317 km 0.950-m gauge and it links Agordat and Asmara with the port of Massawa non operational since 1978 except for about a 5 km stretch that was reopened in Massawa in 1994 rehabilitation of the remainder and of the rolling stock is under way. And in 2003 the line from Massawa all the way through to Asmara has been restored.There are thirty tunnels on the line.This 950mm gauge railway is quite simply one of the wonders of the mountain railway world and ranks alongside such gems as Ootie and Darjeeling in India.It is steam operated.
