which Manchester station?
Can anyone tell me where the attached sign came from?
It was said to be Manchester Central, but that doesn't fit with Corporation Street location. More likely to be Victoria or the way out from Exchange to Victoria maybe. Anyone know the exact location? Thanks. Last edited by Davidsteam; 19th October 2016 at 14:08. |

My bet is Victoria .The main exits from Exchange were onto a street now called Cathedral Approach, quite a way from Corporation Street.I remember a bridge at the far end of Victoria which lead out to Corporation Street.
Platform 11 connected Victoria and Exchange. No mention of this platform on your sign.Perhaps the sign was pre platform 11 connection! Got me going this one.Proper memory tester.Great stations in the 1960's. Stuart |

I think you are spot on there Stuart, weren't platforms 1 to 10 the bay platforms, and to access platforms 11 to 17 you had to go through the ticket barriers near the cafe and bookstall. My thoughts are the sign was situated on platform 11.

If I remember correctly, that sign was on the wall at the top of the underpass slope at the left hand side of the ticket barriers looking from platform 11. The ticket barriers are still in the same position to this day. Indeed, platforms 1 to 10 were the bay platforms for the Bury and Rochdale services, now taken over by new platforms 1&2 for Yorkshire services and the new Metro platforms. Platform 11 ran right through into Exchange station (was it then platform 5?). The underpass lead to platforms 12 to 18 which were the old L&Y platforms. On Saturdays there was a Blackpool train out of platform 12 every 10 minutes! (They departed as soon as they were full!).

Hi Tony, thanks for the further information, in regards to platforms 17 and 18 were they bay platforms on the brewery side of the station? I was trying to work it out the other day and I couldn't quite picture the layout.

There's a nice diagram showing layout of platforms 1-17 on the following web page.

The sign is in BR (London Midland Region) colours, so post-1948; quite probably dates from the 1960s or later, since many people could not afford colour film before then.
