Delays after Eurostar train hits wild boar in France

Poor boar!

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37537258

Eurostar passengers experienced delays after a train hit a wild boar that had strayed onto the track.

The 14:22 service from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord was delayed for about an hour on Sunday after hitting the animal in the Haute Picardie area of northern France.

A Eurostar spokesman said this led to minor delays as temporary speed restrictions were put in place.

He said the train arrived safely at the Paris terminus.

"The collision caused a few delays as the train was stopped to be checked," he said.

"After any collision we need to make sure everything is safe.

"There are wild boars in that area, which can take it upon themselves to roam from their area onto the track."

It is understood no-one was injured, but there has been no further information about the wild boar.

While services appeared to be running as normal by 19:30 BST, the company's website still warned passengers of possible delays.

There are a few videos on You Tube of trains hitting animals mostly filmed from inside the cab so one doesn't see the gruesome part, but still not nice. Although I don't think the boar would have known a thing if it was struck at 300 km/h.

A couple of years ago a DB ICE collected some sheep (or goats, I forget which) that had strayed into a tunnel.
The ICE derailed due to a turnout being located inside the tunnel through which the animal was dragged, and got hung up.
Going fast is fun, except when you hit something.
Many moons ago, an interurban that I was riding home hit a wild goat inside the ten tunnels on approach to Zig Zag.
No derailment, as we generally don't go all that fast here.
But, the goat did knock the Train Stop apparatus lever on the front bogie.
So, that we were not forced to halt due to the emergency application, I opened the cab door and attempted to kick the pendulum lever to reset to vertical and stop dumping air.
Yeh, stupid me hanging outside the train inside the tunnel clinging onto the steps and handrails.
I got it reset before we had to come to a full stand.
I don't think that I would attempt to repeat such a stupid endeavour these days.
Instant dismissal these days if caught doing something so stupid.
Steve.

Don't think I've ever heard of a turnout being located inside a tunnel.

G'day,
I have scrounged the EUB incident report to the ICE derailment in 2008 inside Landruecken tunnel web link.
The then longest railway tunnel in Deutschland and had a crossover inside the tunnel.
https://www.jonroma.net/rail/acciden...ckentunnel.pdf
The report is naturally in German, but there are diagrams that will show the situation.

Turnouts are very common in the longer alpine tunnels. The Gotthard (old and new), Lötschberg (old and new) and Simplon tunnels all have multiple crossovers.

Come to think of it there are two crossovers in the Channel Tunnel. I should have remembered that.
