I am going to Cardiff next Monday.

Which is the best platform to be on for photos?

Depends what you want to see,

If its the HSTs,Heavy Freight etc, you are probably better on Plt 1-4

If its the buses (ie sprinters) you want, platform 6 and 7 for the Valley lines.

Used to work out of Rhymney at the top of the Cardiff Valleys but that was back in the mid 90s so things may have altered a wee bit.

Either way, you're best off on the middle island platform, then you're not far from any of the constant action. Naturally, all depends on the sun, and unfortunately there's nowhere near the amount of freight as could once be found here (Newport's much better for freight workings). Bear in mind that a lot of tall, ugly & imposing buildings have sprung up on the south side of the east end of Cardiff Central. Still, you pays yer money, and you takes yer chances. Have a good day!

And why not ? I thought it was really interesting. Didn't see much freight (though my friend saw a class 60 on an oil tank train before I arrived, but there was plenty of variety in the passenger operations, particularly the intensive service and the Valley Lines platforms. And platfrom 0 was an interesting little diversion.

Not to mention the 2 pints of Brains SA at lunchtime !

I saw plenty of units, but not a lot of freight.

1) there's an article on Freight in South Wales in one of the current magazines (think it was Todays Railways UK)

2) when I went last week, I arrived on a loco hauled train !
