Snowfall hits schools and trains (BBC News)

Snowfall causes disruption to many commuter rail services and forces the closure of up to 70 schools across Kent.

And hundreds more across the country. As one who went to school in the 1950's, I don't recall a single occasion when our school was shut due to the snow (or anything else for that matter). Of course, there were occasions when it was impossible for some to get there but those who could, did and the school remained open for them.

I had an eight mile train journey to get there and although often running late due to bad weather, again I don't recall it ever not running at all.

There were a few occasions when the heating broke down - again, the school didn't close, we just worked in our coats.

It's a different world these days. I don't recall our school being shut in the winter of 1962/63, but I'd imagine that schools here in Gosport are closed today - there's currently about 4 inches of snow, and still falling, and since the roads haven't been gritted/salted (obviously this snow wasn't expected - HA), there are no buses running. I'd have loved to go out and photograph some trains in the snow, but since it's a good three miles to a railway station....
