Hello from Buenos Aires
My name is Alfred and I am retired and living in Buenos Aires, where I was born and educated. My first visit to the UK was in 1946 and have returned many times both for business and pleasure, as had close family ties. I also lived in Guernsey for two years but have now settled once again in Buenos Aires. I have been an off/on train spotter over the years and now hope to catch up and learn from you all!

Hello Speedbird, welcome to the forum. Your name evoked memories, it was the radio call sign of my old employer BOAC then British Airways, do you have any connection with them? Is there much to see railway-wise in Argentina?
Regards, Tony. |

Thank you all for your welcoming messages.
Yes Tony, I took Speedbird from the BOAC/BA call sign. Although I never had anything to do with them directly (I was a travel agent for many years), I travelled with them very often, starting in the days of the Comet IV. My first plane trip (age 8) was on a Lancastrian belonging to BSAA. |

Sorry Tony, didn't answer your second question: railways here have deteriorated to an extent where they are practically non-existant. Local services from Buenos Aires to the suburbs are a major disaster waiting to happen. In fact, an electric train over 40 years old hit the buffers at one of the terminals just a month ago, causing the death of 51 people and injuries to 703 passengers. I could go on about this, but it would take many, many chapters to explain.

Hi Speedbird,
Thanks for the reply. We are a very patient bunch and hearing stories of far away railways could be very interesting, especially if they are as decrepit as you say. Regards, Tony. |
