How true it is, I don't know, but my Partner heard on the radio that it was another of those darned Occupational Crossings, and they were in a Land-Rover that was crossing?

No matter what, I wish the lad well.

Well I saw the report on the news and apparently as the farmer started to drive over the crossing in his Land Rover, the wheels spun on the gravel and it came to a stand. But the report made it sound like the trains fault, the farmer said "the train suddenly appeared" !!!!

Surely the train driver "whistled up" on approach ?

This reminds me of an incident involving a tractor and freight train near Kings Lynn some years ago on one foggy morning. When the tractor got hit, the driver reportedly said: "The train shouldn't have been there, as it wasn't due." Where the heck else Are trains supposed to go for crying out loud?
