I think a lot of the blame for the current state of the network lies with the policy of fragmentation and privatisation brought about by past and present governments. It makes me mad when some politicians refer to passengers as "customers" and when it seems that accountants are the be all and end all of the way the network is run.
Even though it wasn't perfect I still miss the days of British Rail. |

As I always said when I worked you are a customer when you are making an enquiry or buying a ticket, but when you joined us on the train you are a passenger. this fits the dictionary definition for these two words.

It would be quite impossible to have every one of the thousands of small station manned. No system could afford that.
