Yes indeed, Canadian aircraft builder gets British train order.

And I just don't get this Air Condition lark.

1) Europe (quite rightly for once) has been pushing for all electrical devices to REDUCE their power requirements; hence all these directives about efficient vacuum cleaners. And yet here we have train manufacturers sealing up the windows and making the trains much more power-hungry. Very un green.

2) Because the windows are sealed up, if the aircon fails the train will have to come out of service.

IMHO the current stock such as the Networker series have got it right - hopper windows which the passengers can operate to their preference.

Of course there is a reason. TOCs won't have to employ an operator to shut windows on every unit running through the washer which will save them a bit of money.

And Bombardier gets steady after-sales work refurbishing the a/c units.

Well they might be Canadian but they are apparently being built in Derby. Does this mean they are just bolting them together there and all the technology, and bits and bobs will be brought in from somewhere else?

What happens to the old stock that they are replacing? Will they head northwards to replace the Nodding Donkeys so loved by the Northern Folk?

Excuse me taking this off at a slight tangent, but could someone tell me "What is London Overground"? I have totally lost touch. What lines does it run on?

Regards, 62440.

Yes lots of old stock is due to head north in the next few years. 315 & 317 from Lorol, to be followed by 313, 317, 319 & 321 from Thameslink/Great Northern joint franchise when the Thameslink project comes to fruition.

Though I read in the paper yesterday that NR is in big trouble over its financial and project management -and that the MML and Trans Penine wiring is to be cancelled. Which is a serious blow.

GWR wiring not to be affected though.

Yup, and they're welcome to them. Plenty more where they came from (Thameslink).
