Somerset & Dorset Remaining Stations
I have a great affection for the S&D and spend a lot of time exploring it.Below is a list of remaining stations starting at the Southern end.
Main Line Spetisbury Started off as a station but later down graded to a halt. Both Platforms remaining Charlton Marshall Halt Both Platforms remaining Stourpaigne & Durweston Halt Platform Remains but in a derelict condition Shillingstone Station Building remains along with both platforms and is in the hands of the North Dorset Railway trust who are re-laying track and building a repilca Signal Box. Templecombe upper The former S&D platform remains behind the fence of this South West Trains station on the Waterloo to Exeter line. Cole The station building remains and is now a private house Evercreech Junction Station buildings remain as houses Evercreech New No platforms or buildings remain but i thought it was worth a mention due to the fact that some of the railings which ran along the up platform strangely remain between a row of houses and garages. Masbury Halt Station buildings and platforms remain and is a private residence Chilcompton Remnants of the down platform remain. I have never visited Chilcompton yet myself so only going by an old book if anyone has any updates i would by grateful. Midsomer Norton Station Building remains along with both platforms and Goods Shed. Now preserved track re-layed replica Signal Box built and they hope to run trains towards Chilcompton in the future Wellow Station building remains as does the Signal Box both as private houses. I am a fan of the Beatles and never thought that I would be able to link the Beatles with my love of the S&D but artist Peter Blake who designed the cover for The Beatles Sgt Pepper album used to own and live in Wellow station building. Midford The platform remains as does the viaduct which is accesable. Whilst on the viaduct you can look down on the remains of the old GWR viaduct on the old Camerton to Limpley stoke branch which was the setting for the opening scene in the Titfield Thunderbolt film.Heading towards Bath from Midford station a new cycleway is being constructed to Bath along the old S&D trackbed which will include the reinstatement of Tucking Mill viaduct and Combe down and Devonshire Tunnels Bath Green Park The Station building and overal glass roof remain in a very good condition having been refurbished by Sainsburys as a car park who have a supermarket here. Branch lines I have yet to visit the branch lines so this is from books again if anyone has any updates I would be grateful Pylle to Edington Junction Pylle Station Building and Goodshed remain West Pennard Station Buildings and Goodshed remain Edington Junction A large portion of the Island platform remains Bason Bridge to Burnham on sea Bason Bridge The platform remains in the undergrowth Bridwater Branch Cossington Station building remains as a residence Wells Branch Polsham Station Building and platform remain as a residence Last edited by 33011; 9th June 2012 at 12:11. |
