DRS railhead treatment trains
I was watching a DVD the other day which had the RHTT in it. For such a small train both locos were in power. Why is this? You see this all over the place. Topping and tailing. Why does the rear loco have to be working? This is surely a waste of fuel. They can turn it on when they need it. Is there a reason for this?

A lot of these style of trains work with through multi-working. This allows the rear loco to be powered by the front loco.
There is a need on a lot of these trains to keep the loco running to keep the brake timing in the same and also to allow the compressors running to aid keeping air pressure. It also speeds up the reverse move in not having to shut one loco down and start the other one up, especially where only 4 minuites are given in many cases to swop ends. |
