Jarvis has nothing to do with the day to day maintenance of the railways, that is down entirely to Network Rail.
What Jarvis is responsible for is the Track Renewals in its designated contract area. Generally speaking LNE zone or ECML and branches north of Peterborough to the Scottish Border. In 2001 they did have the contract for the maintenance but that was handed back to Network Rail which was repeated for all companies nationally. In reality though the guys on the ground nationally doing renewal or maintenance work are the same ones who have been doing the same job from BR days through various companies to Railtrack, Network Rail, Jarvis, Colas or Balfour Beatty. It is the management of the company that has generally come in from outside firms and given the reputation it got. |
