Sat-navs 'harm railway bridges' (BBC News)
Millions of pounds worth of damage is caused to the UK's railway infrastructure by drivers following sat-nav devices.

And this one goes perfectly with the other thread, The Death of common Sense
Well as the NR man said "Sat-navs are a great tool but they are not an alternative for keeping your wits about you and obeying the rules of the road". People nowadays are lazy, to the extent that they don't even want to do their own thinking. If they're going to drive straight onto a railway track I would question whether they should be in possession of a driving licence at all. It does make you wonder if all these satnavs aquired a glitch which routed them to drive off Beachy Head, would the world be ridded of daft people (very Darwinian ). Seriously though this mindless behaviour costs millions, and perhaps BTP/NR should seek to recover some of the cost personally off the perpetrators (NOT their Insurance companies). |

I don't know what all this Sat. Nav. fuss is all about most people know where they are going anyway. I was a long distance lorry driver for many years and got on very well without it. The only motorway was the M1 and that only went as far as the A5 in the early days.

Hi Alan (Locojoe)
"The only motorway was the M1 and that only went as far as the A5 in the early days." Sorry Alan but the first motorway was the M6 known as the Preston by-pass!! 'course it is NORTH of Watford ........... the M1 came later. Seth |

You are correct but only part of the M6 was completed, the M6 at that time did not pass through Birmingham. On journeys north to Manchester and Liverpool we used M1 A5 A51 M6 then East Lancs Road. Travelling to South Wales took ages with no M4. Route to Scotland was A1 to Scotch Corner. Of course I'm talking of journeys from London.
