Fortunately a very rare occurrence but tragic as there has been loss of life. As usual, little point in trying to speculate on the cause until further enquiries have been made.

Said to be the first in over 50 years according to BBC News tonight. Very sad indeed with these things always seeming to take place in November and December.

The driver of the tram, a 42-year-old man from Beckenham, has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.
British Transport Police (BTP)are investigating claims the tram was exceeding permitted speeds and that the driver may have fallen asleep. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-37932744

Tram that derailed in Croydon killing seven people was travelling at 43.5mph in a 12mph zone, investigators say.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-38003934 No wonder it fell over.
