First UK biodiesel train launched (BBC News)
Britain's first biodiesel train is being launched as part of an attempt to make rail travel greener.

The BBC obviously don't know the difference between a Pendolino and a Voyager. (If, after reading the BBC article, my comments don't appear to make sense it's because the BBC later changed it to read Voyager)

Yes, sorry Alan. Pendolinos are electric trains and Voyagers are diesels. Converting an electric to run on diesel (even biodiesel ) can hardly be described as eco-friendly.
Within minutes of me making my original comments the Virgin Press Office must have contacted the BBC and pointed out their mistake as they have now changed all references (and the photo) in the article from Pendolino to Voyager.

I take my hat off to Virgin for this. In this day and age where people are concerned about the enviroment its good to see a company leadinf the way to reduce emissions. Be interesting to see how the trial goes and how long possibly it might be befor 100% bio diesiel is used.
Ps, does this mean the voyager will smell like chip fat lol |

They still haven't change everything, on the Wales page they show a feature of this using the Pendolino.

The problem is that Bio-Diesel isnt that evironmentally friendly - its just a gimmick. You need hundeds of acres of intensivly farmed mono-culture rape-seed, with all its petroleum-based fertilsers and pesticides, plus all the harvesting and transport of the seed and refining in factories - sometimes thousands of miles away. You would get a better effect by:- Running fewer trains Running shorter and lighter trains Running them more slowly - say 60mph top speed. Last edited by Shed Cat; 7th June 2007 at 18:35. |
