I was searching the web for a picture of Mansfield Central (GCR) station, but could not find one.

Has anyone got one, or can point me to one please ?

Hi,
I do in fact have a couple of photos (not esp high quality) of Mansfield Central taken in 1964. They are of course b/w and are currently in a photo album-don't know how easy it would be to make them available. There is also a decent photo in P. Howard Anderson's book 'Forgotten Railways-The East Midlands'. Hope this is of interest.

Hello Bubblewrap, the photo you sent in someones got the date wrong, its 1955 by 1960 the few passenger trains still out of Mansfield Central were hauled by J39 0-6-0s, the odd excursions were normally hauled by B1s and sometimes a Crab. Oddly enough the name boards on Mansfield Central station had only Mansfield on them they never did say Central.

Oh I wish i had a time machine ,i live 2 mins walk from Great Central Road if you look in the Brown Cow Pub car park you see the remnant of the bridge.

I can only just remember the building work starting on St Peters Way

Hello eagle125, I lived in Mansfield in the steam days but on the opposite side of town to Central station, I've seen whats left of the bridge at the side of the Brown Cow, I used to have a drink there in the 1960s, sad to think that's all that's left of a very interesting piece of the railway system. Have you walked through Titchfield Park recently? The stone retaining wall for the GCR embankment is still there and will be for some time to come as there are now houses built on the old track bed.

Of Course i never got the geography right on that,so the line would continue over Quarry Lane and join the `main line`

I only knew a little of the railway system in Langwith,Langwith Junction & Shirebrook. I was a little nipper then LOL.
That why i want a time machine ,but there lots on the www i`m just happy that people took photos back then

There is a book entitled "An Illustrated History of Mansfield's Railways" by Paul Anderson and Jack Cupit published by the "Irwell Press" (ISBN 1-90366-15-7), I'm sure it has some photos taken of Mansfield Central.You may be able to get it from ABE Books or Amazon.
