Kadees
I'm toying with the idea of using Kadees on my DMU fleet of 142, 155, 156, 158 and 170s but is there an issue with Hornby curves?
The idea would be using something like No.5 couplings but I am concerned that, being box fitted as opposed to bogie fitted, they may not get around 1st and 2nd radius curves. Also, as I will have to use above board magnets, due to my decision to use under-board sidings to save space, will they interfere with the standard hook and bar couplings on my coach and wagon fleets. Would I be best using these couplers on my Lima HST fleet?

As long as you don't make them too high you should be OK.
I have often wondered about using Kadees as they look so neat. At present I have standardised on the small hook and bar couplings (ala Bachmann) Do you have any idea about minimum radius fo Kadees? I am hoping to keep my minimum to about 20 inches (Hornby 3rd radius approx) Best wishes, John H-T. |

I can't find any info on the minimum radius of curves anywhere, none of the mag articles I've seen even mention it.
I'm hessitant to buy the couplings, fit them and then discover they can't go round the curves

Been at Derby show today helping a friend run a layout. His stock is fitted with Kadees and he tells me he does'nt think they are a problem on any radius track so long as the magnets are not placed on the tightest part of the bends. This he says is more to do with the couplings not connecting rather than coming apart,ie the knuckles come together rather than the claw.
Hope this is of some use. Paul. |

Thats perfect ta! no intention to (un)couple on curves, to much hassle with hook and bar to bother thinking about it with Kadees.
