Welsh highland and ffestiniog.
Now there is a connection between the two lines due too open soon, would you be able to use one train to go from one end right to the other and return?
How long would such a journey take? Surley the speed limit must rise?

1. Ffestiniog stock will be able to travel on the Welsh Highland, but probably not vice-versa due to the Ffestiniog loading gauge. Certainly the Garratts won't get through Moelwyn tunnel !
2. about 3 hours from one end to the other ? 3. have you ever been on the Welsh Highland ? Sections of that have limits of 10mph and 15mph due to the severity of the curves. [ PS a trip on the WHR is highly recommended, just not if you're in a hurry !]

I helped lay some of the track through the Aberglaslyn pass, recently just opened to Hafod y Llyn.
The official view is that these through trains will operate only on a "specials" basis. As has been said, the only stock capable is FR due to the loading gauge. Also a round trip would take well over 4 hours and due to the lack of toilet facilities, would be difficult for the more elderly passengers shall we say. So its unlikely on a regular timetable, but FR specials using double fairlies may happen next summer, but again, they might not be able to carry enough coal for the full trip. Garratts would, but wouldnt fit through FR tunnels |
